How do I upgrade my existing individual subscription?

You can upgrade an individual subscription to a Super Duolingo Family Plan in the Duolingo app or web browser based on how you originally subscribed. 
NOTE: The Duolingo Max Family Plan is currently only available to iOS subscribers in certain countries and courses. 

iOS Duolingo app:

You can upgrade your subscription from your individual package to the Family Plan. Once upgraded, you will be charged immediately for the Family Plan, and then Apple will process a prorated refund based on the remainder of your individual subscription. Please follow these steps:

  1. Open the Duolingo app
  2. Tap the Super icon at the top of the home screen
  3. Tap Settings (gear icon)
  4. Tap “Manage subscription”
  5. Tap “Change plan”
  6. Select the Family Plan and confirm
  7. Confirm purchase via Apple
  8. The upgrade should take effect immediately
  9. Once upgraded, you will be charged immediately for the Family Plan, and then Apple will process a prorated refund based on the remainder of your individual subscription
  10. The renewal date will be adjusted to the date of the upgrade

Android Duolingo app:

You can upgrade your subscription from your individual package to the Family Plan, if you are currently subscribed to the annual individual plan. Please note that you will be charged immediately to upgrade the remaining billing period in your current subscription to the Family Plan and will receive access to Family Plan features immediately.

The amount charged will be the difference between the price of Family Plan for the remaining billing period and the amount your current individual plan costs for the remaining billing period.

  1. Open the Duolingo app
  2. Tap the Super icon at the top of the home screen
  3. Tap Settings (gear icon)
  4. Tap “Manage subscription”
  5. Tap “Change plan”
  6. Select the Family Plan and confirm
  7. Confirm purchase via Google Play
  8. The upgrade should take effect immediately
  9. Once upgraded, you will be charged a prorated amount immediately to upgrade the remaining billing period in your current subscription to the Family Plan
  10. The renewal date will be based on the original subscription

Web:

  1. Open your Duolingo account on a web browser
  2. Click “More” menu (left)
  3. Select “Settings”
  4. Select “Super Duolingo
  5. Click “Change plan”
  6. Select the Family Plan and confirm
  7. Confirm purchase
  8. The upgrade should take effect immediately
  9. Once upgraded, you will be charged immediately for the Family Plan, and then a prorated refund will process in 5–10 business days based on the remainder of your individual subscription
  10. The renewal date will be adjusted to the date of the upgrade

I'm not seeing an option to upgrade my existing subscription. Why?

If you're NOT seeing an option to upgrade an existing subscription, please check for the following:

  • Your subscription is set to expire. Only subscriptions set to renew are eligible for upgrading to Family Plan. Go into your Duolingo profile and tap "Keep my subscription", then follow the steps to upgrade your plan. 
  • Web: If you are in a free trial, you will not see the ability to upgrade. We suggest cancelling your free trial and then re-subscribing to Family Plan once the trial expires. 
  • Android/Google Play: if you have a monthly subscription through Google Play, you will not see an option to upgrade to a Family Plan. Please cancel your monthly subscription and then res-subscribe to Family Plan once the monthly plan expires.
